The mission of HUGGS Canada, a registered Canadian charity, is to provide underprivileged students in India with the opportunity to further their education, enabling them to contribute more effectively to their families and communities.
Thanks to our generous donors, HUGGS enables young people to complete their secondary and post secondary education, preparing them for careers such as nursing, teaching and computing.
When I visited our project in Vizag.... I saw how these students, despite their disadvantaged backgrounds, balance helping their families and the demands of school -- because they know completing their education is the key to helping them and their families out of poverty. And I saw the hope on their faces as they came to believe that HUGGS really was giving them a chance to change their lives.
Since 2003, HUGGS has supported 25 students and our very first student graduated from Nursing School this year.
HUGGS relies on voluntary donations from individuals, groups, foundations and companies. Please consider joining our growing community of supporters and help HUGGS change the lives of even more deserving young people in the future.

India: Sights! Sounds! Students! Helen and Marilyn are wrapping up the annual HUGGS directors’ trip to Vizag, with so much to tell you...it’s hard to know where to start.
We’ve seen our 18 current students, interviewed many new candidates, and will look forward to introducing them to you soon.
We were also so pleased to see some of our graduates in action:
- Viveka, our recent NURSE graduate, showed us around the cardiac unit of the hospital where she works. We met her coworkers and one of the cardiac surgeons, with bright smiles all around. She really enjoys her work.
- Suriya Chandra was one of the students who received vocational training (in small appliance repair) in the early days of HUGGS. He worked from his home for a year, until one day he responded to a job advertisement with a MICROFINANCE company. He now supervises a staff of 10, has a good salary, and recently got married—he’s a happy guy!!
- Sujatha has completed her college degree and is now in the middle of her teacher’s training. Today we saw her teach physics to 80 students packed into a small room, some sitting on the floor. She is a natural TEACHER and had their attention completely.
You would be very proud to see these fine young people too—a testament to the support you have given them over the years.
