How many students does HUGGS support?

In 2003 HUGGS was started specifically to support one student.  Currently there are 18 high school and college students from the slum areas of Vizag studying with HUGGS support.
An additional 6 young people have completed either High School, Vocational School or Nursing School.   This makes a total of 24 students whose lives have been empowered by education.  The numbers of students increase as funding becomes available.

What is the average age of a HUGGS student?
Because the primary goal of HUGGS is to help students finish their high school and post-secondary education, ages range between 15 and 22.

How are students chosen for HUGGS support?
The criteria for acceptance are threefold: financial need, academic ability and family encouragement. The students chosen are from underprivileged families living in the slums areas of Vizag, with limited or no access to school after grade 10.
The selection process takes place locally, with final decision made by the Board.


What is included in HUGGS support of these students?

Your donations provide for tuition, school supplies, uniforms and transportation, as well as medical assistance, tutoring, and nutritional supplements as required.

What is the cost per student?
The average cost for one student is $1000 CAD per year while in High School, the cost increases to $1,500 for tertiary education.

How many years does HUGGS support each student?
On average, each student requires six years of support to complete their studies; from grades 11 and 12, through college, university or technical school.

How does HUGGS operate here in Canada?
HUGGS works out of a church basement office in North Vancouver. One part time staff person assists the 6 volunteer Directors who compose the Board of HUGGS Canada. Other volunteers work on committees, assist with office work and help with special events.

How does HUGGS deliver its services in India?

Founder Lisa Heel lived for some time in India developing protocols for HUGGS including the selection and mentoring of students. Today, HUGGS works through an Indian NGO which is responsible for the financial aspects as well as for the welfare of the students.
